	HAY BAR FEEDS AS NATURE INTENDED   The slogan “Feed As Nature Intended” has been used by Park Feeders to promote their forage feeder Hay Bar since it was first introduced in 2003, and for good reason.  A huge amount of time and money has been spent in all disciplines but especially in the racing industry trying to improve performance, by fine-tuning diet and supplements.  Sometimes we miss the obvious.  We are all creatures of habit and once in a routine we are very loathed to alter our ways.  Do we even stop to consider not only what we feed but also how we feed it? The feeding position has a huge impact on a horse’s welfare.  The dental profession strongly advice feeding from the floor.  As soon as a horse raises its head to feed his jaw goes out of alignment and this causes uneven wear on the teeth which results in dental abnormalities such as hooks and ramps.   We all know what a nightmare bitting can be when a horse is not comfortable with his mouth, his mind in not on his job. Hay Bar was first introduced some eighteen months ago to make it possible to feed from the floor in the natural position without contaminating the forage and creating unnecessary waste.

Feeding Race, competition horses and youngstock has almost become a science.  We all spend time planning our horses diet to ensure that our horses get a good balanced diet to match their life style with all the additives required. 

But do we ever stop to think how we feed them?  Tradition has dictated racks normally to be filled from over head hay barns.  Then we moved on to nets, cheaper, very practical when travelling and very versatile, but did we ever think what we were doing raising our horses heads from the floor to feed?  Nature designed her Equines to graze from the ground not the hedge.  When a horse raises his head to feed he put his jaw out of alignment which in the long term effects the wear on his teeth and in time creates dental abnormalities.

The raised feeding position encourages him to bolt his food and this in turn can lead to digestive problems and sometimes colic.  If the food is not being chewed properly and taken too quickly it also means he is not getting the full benefit of what he is being fed.

The raised head when feeding encourages the lower neck muscles to be exaggerated and the top ones to be under developed thus spoiling the top line.  This in turn effects the airways as they are not draining down as required and in time this can damage the sinuses and the respiratory tract.

The lowered head when grazing utilises the back muscles correctly and this in turn help to ensure that a lot of back problems are avoided.

The list of reasons for feeding a horse from the floor is endless – the reasons for feeding from the wall are purely ones of convenience.  The stabled horse deserves to be fed from the floor if only to try to emulate his natural environment for a confined space in a stable is far from normal for the horse.

Hay Bar has had a very successful spring, Blansby Park the Hay Bar horse has qualified for the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead and Hay Bar has gone international with new retail outlets in Ireland, Sweden, Norway and Spain.

Raylia Dugmore M.D of Park Feeders travelled to Gothenburg in Sweden for their spring show to support K. A Trading launch Hay Bar.

HAY BAR GOES POLO

Hay Bar has now broken into the world of polo.  Large yards with lots of ponies are not always labour intensive and so it has not taken long for the yard managers to appreciate the huge advantage of using Hay Bars.

Keeping ponies fit is of utmost importance and the advantages of feeding from the floor are numerous, but also the money saved by cutting down on waste forage and wasted bedding has made it obvious that Hay Bar is the way forward.

Hay Bar Helps the Pros

Hay Bar was first seen in June of last year.  The impact it made was to say the least impressive.  The initial advertising was aimed at making the name known.  Very quickly the professional  world recognised that here was a very simple product that solved numerous problems.  Soon the endorsements came flooding in.

Equine dentists welcomed it for aiding jaw alignment and helping  an even wear pattern on the teeth.

Physiotherapists recommended the Hay Bar as the grazing position helps to ease many back problems and encourages the correct use of neck muscles.  Helping to improve top line and discouraging development of the ugly lower neck.

The veterinary profession encourages its use as the airways drain down and this in turn helps keep the respiratory tract and sinuses clear.

Yvonne Tyson and her daughter Sarah from the world of Endurance Riding are experts at producing fit and sound horses well into their teens.  Sarah recently represented her country in Dubai in the FEI World Endurance Championships and was the sole British completion on Derek Francis’ 17yr old grey Arab gelding Simbar.  They completed 100 miles in 11hrs with an average speed of 10 mph.

Yvonne and Sarah purchased Hay Bars for their 20 plus yard last year initially to save on time filling nets – mucking out and waste both of fodder and bedding.  They soon realised what a difference the new feeding system was making to their horses.  The horses became more relaxed and content – their neck muscles improved giving a more relaxed front of neck.  The natural feeding position also helped to keep them right in their wind and the general improvement was for both the horses and the workforce.  All this plus money saved on time and fodder.

Twelve months have passed since Hay Bar was first introduced.  We have now established beyond doubt that it is a product that helps the equine industry in many ways.  Top trainers are installing Hay Bar for numerous reasons.  The time and waste it saves is a help to most yards but more importantly the numerous advantages of the natural feeding position assist the trainer to produce horses that are performing at optimum level.

Park Feeders has recently won yet another order from a rehabilitation yard. Jann Turner Physiotherapist at Boyton Hall Equine Centre in Norfolk has insisted that all stables will be fitted with the Hay Bar, as she states, “I believe this product is an excellent way to feed a stabled horse. Hay Bar has done it again but this time with a smaller Hay Bar for the ponies.

“Public demand for a smaller version of the Hay Bar has at last been met.  The pony world has demanded that we make a smaller version of Hay Bar and that is exactly what we have done.”

HAY BAR SHOWS THE WAY

The show season is looming up and it is a year since Hay Bar first went out on field trials.  Sarah Amblers’ Endeavour was one guinea pig and his outstanding results Supreme Champion C.H.A.P.S. and B.S.P.S. last year only go to show how Hay Bar has helped to keep him in top form.

The show world is forever looking for ways to improve their horses and feeding from Hay Bar certainly helps to improve the upper neck muscles and stops the development of ugly lower ones.  A good top line certainly makes all the difference not only to a horses’ conformation but also the way he bridles and goes.

Louise Gaunt bought Hay Bar last summer for Stan the Man to stop him wasting his forage.  Louise soon realised the difference in top line and soon ordered Hay Bars for all her show horses.  Stan certainly went on to prove the point when he went on to win the Heavyweight Cob of the Year at the Horse of the Year Show.  Good luck this season to Endeavour and to Stan the Man from Park Feeders Ltd.

Hay Bar had a double celebration the day their sales reached 1,000.  Stan The Man ( Hay Bar user!!)  won the Heavyweight  Cob Championship at the Horse of the Year Show.

Stan returned to the N.E.C. after success in Search For A Star in 2003.  Hay Bar sends Stan and his owner producer Louise Gaunt warmest congratulations on their amazing achievement.

HAY BAR SOLVES THE PROBLEM

The problem being how to feed horses forage as  ‘NATURE INTENDED’ from the floor and in a manner, which is ‘FAR EASIER FOR YOU AND FAR BETTER FOR YOUR HORSES’

The HAY BAR system was originally devised to help a show hunter brood mare suffering from pneumonia.  It encouraged her to eat from the floor and as a result helped drain down her airways.  The mare recovered and we soon realised the HAY BAR system had numerous advantages.  HAY BAR aids digestion as the forage is taken more slowly.  HAY BAR saves waste, as the forage is far less likely to mix with the bedding.  Mares, foals and youngstock benefit, as the HAY BAR is far safer than nets or racks.  HAY BAR is quicker and easier to fill (even by a small child) and hence saves precious time.
